Using Hicksian Surplus Measures to Examine Consistency of Individual Preferences: Evidence from a Field Experiment
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper pits neoclassical theory against prospect theory by investigating several clean tests of the competing hypotheses. Consistent with previous work, the field experimental data suggest that prospect theory adequately organizes behavior among inexperienced consumers, whereas consumers with intense market experience behave largely in accordance with neoclassical predictions. The data indicate that the convergence in values occurs entirely because of lower Hicksian equivalent surplus values. JEL: C93 (Field Experiments), D11 (Microeconomic Theory)

Do causes of environmental problems affect Hicksian equivalent surplus? Evidence from the field
Measuring preferences via stated methods remains the only technique to obtain the total economic value of a non-marketed good or service. This study examines if alternative causes of an environmental problem affect individual statements of compensation demanded. Making use of a unique sample drawn from the Netherlands, we find that Hicksian equivalent surplus (ES) is not significantly affected ...

متن کاملOn the axiomatic foundations of aggregate consumer surplus measures
In standard economic environments, axiomatic foundations are developed for the two aggregate Hicksian consumer surplus measures aggregate willingness-to-pay (compensating variation) and aggregate willingness-to-accept (equivalent variation) as ordinal social welfare indices, without the imposition of any extraneous assumptions such as the interpersonal utility comparison and the expected utilit...
متن کاملAn investigation of individual preferences: consistency across incentives and stability over time
This study compares individual preferences across incentives (i.e., hypothetical vs. real incentives) and over time (i.e. elicitation at two different points in time) in a choice experiment involving charitable donating decisions. We provide evidence of hypothetical bias but little evidence of instability of individual giving. There is significant heterogeneity in individual preferences, with r...
